What's your A1c?
A1c what's that I hear you say well, when you have glucose or blood sugar in the blood stream it can in affect sugar coat the red blood cells see below, red blood cells are replaced every 3 months. So this number gives a more a more detailed look at what our blood sugars have been doing over time.
It was recommended today that Doctors should use HbA1c as a method to diagnose diabetes as it gives more of a real life and long term picture, rather than a fasting glucose currently The American Diabetes Association states that a fasting glucose of over 126ml/dl is diabetes. The proposed recommendations would be an A1c of 6.5 and above.

Hi-I do not know my numbers but I wonder this: Is this a test that doctors do as a part of a complete physical? Is it covered by insurance?
ReplyDeleteHI Jennifer I am not sure if its routine, but if there's a risk of diabetes I would think insurance would pay Rebecca
