Channa Dal
Here's another yummy recipe for you from my mum in law
Ingredients:
- 1 cup channa dal or chick peas garbanzo beans to us
- 2 big tomatoes chopped
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 1 green chili
- 1 teaspoon ginger/garlic paste
- 1 curry leave
- a small stick of Cinnamon
- one clove
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- pinch of turmeric
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- fennel seeds
Method:
- soak the channa overnight, then pressure cook it for 3 whistles
- in a separate pan, heat canola oil and then add cinnamon, clove, green chili, fennel seeds and curry leaves for 2 min
- add onion saute for a few minutes then add ginger/garlic paste and tomatoes
- let it reduce down to a paste, then add masala powder, coriander and cumin and channa
- turn the heat to low and simmer for a further 15 min, garnish with cilantro
This dish goes great with chapati, its a great source of protein and fiber, copper, folate and manganese.

ReplyDeletewow! all those Indian food treats! you must be having a good time with your mom-in-law!
ReplyDeleteI make a lot of curries and dal but have not ever cooked with mung beans. I am going to have to try this one--it looks great!
ReplyDeleteI thought I would point out that this recipe is not Channa Dal but Channa or Chole. Channa Dal is a lentil, not a Chickpea which this recipe is. So this recipe is really Channa Masala. Channa (chickpeas) and Channa Dal (split lentils) are two different things. So if in a restaurant or Indian market, if its Chickpeas you want, make sure you ask for Channa Masala or Chole, not Channa Dal. If you like lentils definitely try Channa Dal, but just remember its different from plain Channa.
ReplyDeleteI love dahl and am always curious to see how others prepare it. your recipe looks really delicious, nice to have a mum in law like that! x shayma
