Lasagna with Applewood Smoked Cheese Sauce
I made carbonara and a lasagna while at my parents house yep we are pasta lovers. This lasagna was tasty with the applewood smoked cheese added to the becharmel sauce. I did struggle a little though as a lot of their herbs were way out of date. I didn't realise how much I depended on all my herbs and spices at home. So be sure to give your spice and herb cupboard a clean this spring, herbs and spices really only last 1-2 years. Also consider planting some fresh herbs in your garden or keep in pots on your deck :-) Or if your not big on using herbs and spices like my parents I would suggest maybe a Chinese five spice, an Italian blend and maybe some parsley.
Ingredients:
- one pack of minced beef
- one - two teaspoons of Italian herbs or a pinch of parsley, sage, oregano, basil and thyme
- salt and pepper to taste
- one chopped onion
- one can of chopped tomatoes or 5 fresh chopped
- 5 cloves of chopped garlic
- one pack of pre cooked lasagna
- about a tablespoon of butter
- a tablespoon of corn flour or all purpose flour to make a roux
- 2 cups of milk
- 3 big slices of applewood smoked cheese
Method:
- saute the onion and garlic in olive oil for 3 minutes
- add the beef and simmer for 10 minutes
- now add the herbs, tomatoes and salt and pepper
- simmer for 30-40 minutes
- meanwhile melt the butter mix in the flour to form a roux and then slowly stir in the milk stirring all the while as not to get lumpy
- then layer the meat sauce then lasagna, then becharmel cheese sauce until you fill the dish
- bake at 300 degrees for 30-45 minutes and serve with salad
Have a fun holiday weekend all
love

ReplyDeleteIt can be challenging to cook at someone else's home when you don't have all your trusty gadgets, spices, and herbs. The lasagna looks absolutely amazing though! Never heard of the applewood smoked cheese although it sounds wonderful.

Love lasagna, but hardly ever make it myself. Seems when someone else makes it, it tastes better. Don't know why.

Applewood smoked cheese? Gosh, I haven't seen that in AGES - I used to adore this cheese. Can just imagine the flavours in that Lasagne. Fantastic.
ReplyDeleteMy family isn't too keen on pasta.....unlike me :( haha
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a lot of spices at home, and a lot of the time, I buy spices for a specific recipe but then only use them once and sorta forget about it because I don't cook that often! I've been meaning to make lasagne some time soon- I've even bought lasagna sheets! :D This looks super delicious!

ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing sounding lasagna, Reb. Just the applewood smoked cheese alone makes me crave it! That's a great tip about cleaning out your herbs/spices...they definitely lose their potency after too long =) And we are pasta lovers, too.
ReplyDeleteRebecca, lasagna is such a labor of love....such a delicious and special pasta specialty. I love the addition of the applewood smoked cheese! Yum!
