Rebecca's Guide to Pinterest

I did a screen shot tutorial demonstrating how to use pinterest and thought you would find it helpful.  I am enjoying my travel boards, and using it as a way to collect recipes. It is becoming a good source of traffic and I find it fun, I even do pinterest for a client.

On twitter today there was a discussion around it and copywright issues here's a great post explaining it and the blog writer has decided to delete her account and so have others. Bloggers can have content and pictures stolen with or without pinerest unfortunately. Here's a good article on how to protect your content and if you want you can add code to your site to stop folks pinning it. I think there's a fine balance between sharing cool things more and the risk of bad folks stealing. The more eye's see it I guess by the laws of probability it may increase risk, but only you can decide if the fun factor and sharing items will outweigh it?

I personally don't repin much unless I know the source, I mostly use the pin it bookmarket and collect interesting articles on the web for my travel board on places I would like to visit, social media and entrepreneurial articles, gardening as I am starting a small garden this year and need tips and resources, the Tuesday Food Market board and of course recipes.

I personally will continue to use this fun site as I can save articles and resources in a virtual space and at this time I don't have anything else that does this.

  1. Well said and valid argument for keeping account/boards. I am keeping mine as well. Used responsibly, Pinterest is a powerful tool/resource and a great way to organize ideas/pics/etc.

  2. Michelle I agree its too powerful and popular as a social media consultant to ignore

  3. I've loved the recipes I have found, but I have found that I am not as "in-love" with it as I once was. I'm not keen on all the copyright information. Seems this should be something Pinterest should be working on before it ends up costing them.

  4. I have always steered clear of programmes like this including twitter and facebook, one day someone may convince me to use them, but to date I have no interest and not enough time in my life :) Keep well Diane

  6. The way most people use Pinterest, I honestly don't see much difference between old-fashioned bookmarking a site and pinning a photo and link, except one is public, one is private. What if a designer tore out inspirational pictures from books and magazines and placed them on a bulletin board in their office? Would that be a copyright violation? I don't think so, unless they were attempting to make money from the images or pass them off as their own. I'm sorry if some artists are upset that their online photographs have been pinned, but publicity is a two-edged sword: you either want to market your work to a wide audience of potential buyers, or you want to limit your audience and sales by keeping it under strict lock-and-key in a gallery..

  7. I love Pinterest as a way to file recipes I would like to try. It has become enormously popular. Hopefully, people will learn to use it responsibly.

  8. I love Pinterest, but I know what you mean fine line between sharing and stealing content...so many people copy and paste your entire recipe in the discription, especially if it's short....So there is no reason for anyone to visit your site. I hate that.

  10. I think Pinterest is fun and find it more enjoyable than either Facebook or Twitter. It has been a wonderful way for others to find my blog and for me to find others. I am not concerned about copyright issues. Those who want to copy will do so with Pinterest or without.

  12. Terrific tutorial Rebecca.
I saw something on Twitter recently that said it best. It was something about how - that once we post content/pictures on the internet, it's like opening a window. We just have to hope that most people will do the right thing :)

  14. I love Pinterest, as it. Like what you said, Pinning or not, images or recipes are bound to be stolen otherwise.

  15. I'm back with a question Rebecca. How important are the words you put in the descriptions of your pins? I notice that some people don't put anything related to the pin itself in their wording.

Also does what you put in the description of your pin help with people's search? In other words, I have a Kitchen Board with a lot of kitchens. I make sure I use the word "kitchen" in each of the descriptions of everything I pin. Does it matter?

  18. Pinterest has become increasingly popular but it has lately been the talk of bloggers and users. I loved the site but realized that its wasn't as useful if your not into arts and crafts. Besides, I want a site that gives me as many benefits as possible. I like Clipix much better because I am able to do everything I once did on Pinterest and more. I love that I can set my boards to private is I choose to and I am also not restricted to saving only pretty images. With Clipix I have been able to upload PDF files, word docs etc. I like it so much better.
