Union Station, Winston Salem

I recently attended a wonderful tour of the Union Station in Winston Salem, NC the city as been hosting numerous tours to show the wonderful renovation it has recently completed. The city lovingly restored this iconic station that was build in 1926. It was used as a station until the 1970's later it was used as a car garage and then bought by the city. Over many years and gathering funds from different sources the city restored it, part of the building will be used for Winston Salem State University, part for the cities transportation department and part will be a new restaurant. The main lobby will be open for the public and as an event space.

The building is gorgeous with grand 1920's style, one striking and slightly unsettling feature is the difference between the waiting rooms, the one the white folks sit in is much grander than the other side the African Americans would have used. The signs around the station explain the history very well and the tour told it in a matter of fact and truthful way. Michelle McCullough was an impressive guide who truly cares for history and the inclusion of all peoples stories.

Sadly there are no immediate plans to bring passenger trains back to Winston Salem, although the tracks are still here. It would be wonderful if they did.

I adore old tile.

Did you know that Winston Salem had street cars?

If you are in the Winston Salem area in the coming months be sure to visit and it will be exciting to see which restaurant opens here.
